Traits of a good leader July 2007
I believe to be a good leader we must maximize ourselves to our fullest potential. There are two levels of leadership: 1-day-to-day & 2-long-term responsibility. We need to take leadership serious. We need to show others how to lead. Great leaders develop other leaders. If we are such great leaders, there should be a trail of leaders, which are following us. There are many elements to leadership, but I believe the most important one is to have GENUINE care for those that God has placed around you. We need to exploit the negatives, when we sign on for a leadership roles, criticism is part of it. It is very hard when we hear people being negative, but we must show others that are following us how to handle the negative. We need to be leaders full of ambition, courage, and focus. We must cultivate the 4 C’s. Let me give you some definitions according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary: 1-Competent-proper or rightly significant, having necessary or adequate ability or qualities, having the capacity to function or develop in a particular way. 2-Communicate-share, to convey knowledge of or information about, make known, to reveal by clear signs, to cause to pass from one to another, to transmit information, thought, or feeling so that it is satisfactorily received or understood. 3-Character- 1-one of the attributes or features that make up and distinguish an individual, reputation, moral excellence and firmness, a person marked by notable or conspicuous traits. 4-Class- social status, high quality, elegance, kind sharing common attributes, distinct or permanent values, the best of its kind.
Lets all ask ourselves if we are people, Christian people that have integrity, do everything in a first-class approach, admit when we fail, paint a picture for those who are following, and know what we are doing. As Christian people, we need to be led by the Holy Spirit so we can make the right choices, be wise, and walk in understanding. We know we are a child of God. All that God has promised in His Word is ours. Success is measured differently in the world than it is according to God. I believe God wants us to PROSPER in everything we do as Christians! In order to receive what God has for us as leaders and followers we need to know what we have. We need to communicate those benefits and promise to those around us. I am not just speaking to Apostles, Prophets, Pastors, Evangelists, and Teachers here. Ephesians 4:11-17, 11And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; 15But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: 16From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. Notice it says for the perfecting of the saints (which is all Christians, everywhere), for the work of the ministry (which is all Christians as well) until we come to the unity of faith, to receive the FULLNESS of Jesus Christ. Why did God give us these gifts or leaders? So we can be perfected, edify others around us, fitted together, to make INCREASE in the body of Christ in love. Glory to God! That is shouting ground! I want to be the best leader I can be, but most of all I want to be where God wants me. Rev. June Evans told me years ago, “It is far better to be where God wants you to be then anyplace else”. I will never forget that statement. I have learned this to be so true in my life and ministry. Lets all find where God wants us to be and have the success He expects from us as Christians. God has an incredibly high view of people. God believes that people are capable of amazing things. I have been told that I need to believe in Jesus (and I do), which is a good thing, but I am learning that Jesus believes in you and me. I have been told I need to have faith in God (and I do), which is a good thing, but I am learning that God has faith in you and me. Let’s have the traits of a good leader!
